What Is Delta 10 THC?

You are likely to have heard the term THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) for some time now as it relates to marijuana. Although still illegal on a federal level but increasingly becoming legalized on a state level, marijuana has enjoyed underground use for decades, and discussions of the cannabinoid THC and THC content have been around for as many years.

The increased popularity of marijuana and hemp has brought about more interest in THC, and this has corresponded with the discovery of different THC molecules within the cannabis plant. Delta 9 THC has been known for years and is the THC molecule abundant in the marijuana variety of the cannabis plant. Delta 8 THC is a recent discovery and has since caught on like wildfire in the wellness market. But some recent news in the cannabis industry has revealed that yet another THC molecule has been discovered: Delta 10 THC.

The Origins of Delta 10 THC

While the discovery of most cannabinoids is a product of diligent research, the discovery of Delta 10 THC is reported to be entirely by accident. Delta 10 THC forms in such minute quantities in the cannabis plant that it has been mistaken for other elements. It was only recently discovered when a California cannabis company that creates concentrates bought a harvest of cannabis plants. Unknown to the company, the crop had been sprayed with a fire retardant to protect it from the California wildfires. During the extraction process from this treated crop, strange crystals began to form in the extracted oils. These crystals were sent to a licensed testing facility, and it was discovered that these crystals were the newest THC molecule, Delta 10 THC.

The Effects of Delta 10 THC

Because Delta 10 THC is such a recent discovery, there is scarce evidence on how it interacts with the body or how it makes you feel. However, those who have sampled the cannabinoid have reported an energized and invigorated feeling throughout their body.

Those who have experienced Delta 8 THC and Delta 10 THC say that the feeling throughout their body was a similar overall good feeling. However, where Delta 8 THC provides more of a relaxed feeling like you would get from Indica strains of cannabis, those who have tried it report that Delta 10 THC presents with a more energetic body high, like with the Sativa strain of cannabis.

When compared to Delta 9 THC, users have claimed that, while Delta 10 THC does have intoxicating effects, the users report they could think much more clearly with Delta 10 THC. Those who have tried it report a clear mind and accelerated ability to think.

One apt comparison between these three types of THC is that they are like a group of friends. Delta 8 is your easy-going friend, Delta 9 is the guy who’s ready to have fun, and Delta 10 is the outgoing athlete.

Delta 10 on the Market

You are not likely to find many products containing Delta 10 THC on the market today because of its very recent discovery. However, that will likely change. The considerable demand for Delta 8 THC once it reached the market has led those in the cannabis industry to believe there will continue to be a high demand for legal THC products with a lesser psychotropic effect than Delta 9 THC. They believe that Delta 10 THC could be the next big craze in hemp products.

What stands in the way of the mass market for Delta 10 THC is the complication of safely producing it. Laboratories cannot create the element as it had initially been created by spraying it with a fire retardant. The resulting product would be dangerous. Cannabis laboratories are working on a food-grade extraction alternative and establishing the proper processes necessary to make sufficient quantities of Delta 10 THC to be an economically viable product.

Delta 10 THC from a Legal Standpoint

The legality of Delta 10 THC will likely be as much of a grey area as it is with Delta 8 THC. These cannabinoids are produced through a chemical process instead of being extracted directly from the hemp plant. This distinction is what some government agencies and states are pointing to in order to distinguish these cannabinoids from less psychotropic cannabinoids like CBD and make them illegal.

The Farm Bill of 2018 clearly states that hemp-based products are legal if they are:

  • Derived from hemp and not marijuana; and
  • Contain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by weight.

This wording would put Delta 8 THC, Delta 10 THC, and CBD in the same category, as the Farm Bill’s language does not explicitly ban them. However, the DEA has weighed in that they consider “all synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinols” to be a Schedule 1 substance and, therefore, illegal. However, the DEA has not defined “synthetically derived” or taken the steps necessary to enforce this mandate. However, 11 states have used the synthetic derivation as a reason to ban Delta 8 THC in their state. Delta 10 THC will likely follow whichever legal path is taken by Delta 8 THC, so its future legal position remains murky.
