How to Take CBD Oil

If you find your going to the doctor and are prescribed a medication, the doctor handles all of the necessary calculations regarding your dosage. He considers things like your body weight and the recommendations of the pharmaceutical company before issuing that prescription. So when you get your prescription from the pharmacy, all you have to do is read the instructions on the label and take as directed.

However, when you are getting started with CBD oil, it is up to you to handle the calculations, to know when and how to take it. Or you may already be taking CBD oil but are not sure if you’re doing it correctly. This is where we at PharmaCBD can be of some assistance.

How to Take CBD Oil

Taking CBD oil as a tincture is a great way to get your daily dose of CBD. This method provides a faster onset of the benefits, similar to an inhalant, but with a long-lasting effect, like with an edible.

First, use the dropper enclosed with your CBD oil and measure out your correct dose (we have more information on that later). Place the dose below your tongue and hold it there for one to two minutes. The capillaries below your tongue will bring the oil directly into your bloodstream, so the longer you hold it under your tongue, the better. After holding the CBD oil under your tongue for the proper amount of time, swallow the oil. Your digestive system will then process the oil and introduce more of the CBD into your bloodstream.

Unless your doctor instructs otherwise, we recommend that you take your CBD oil dose either before or during a meal. CBD is oil-soluble, so a meal that is full of healthy fats is ideal. Taking your CBD with a meal slows the processing of the oil, which means more of the CBD has time to get into your bloodstream.

Getting Started

Everyone is different, and everyone reacts to supplements differently. It is no different with CBD oil. Several factors will determine your results from the tincture. Things such as:

  • Your weight,
  • Your body chemistry,
  • Your tolerance to intoxicants, and
  • Your age

All play a part in how effectively you feel the results from the CBD oil and how long the benefits last.

The first thing you want to do is to calculate your dosage. Look at the label on the bottle of your CBD oil, and you will see it lists the total milligrams of CBD in the bottle and the total milliliters of CBD. You need to calculate your milligrams per milliliter, dividing the total milligrams by the total milliliters. Let’s take our THC Free Tincture Oil, for example. It comes with an 860-milligram option in a 30-milliliter bottle. Therefore, you are getting 28.7 milligrams per milliliter. Keep this in mind when measuring your dose using the dropper that comes with your CBD oil.

We recommend starting with 20 to 40 milligrams of CBD per day. If you are treating minor issues like sleep, start on the lower end of the scale and either take the dose once a day or split it between two equal doses twice a day. However, if you are managing acute bodily discomforts, you may want to start around 40 milligrams and split that into three doses (40/3 = 13.3 milligrams each dose) to equal out one dose every 8 hours.

Take your starter dose for a few days and see how you feel. If you are not experiencing the benefits you desire after that time, increase your daily dosage by another 5 milligrams. Repeat the process until you achieve your desired results. The rule of thumb here is to start small and work your way up until you find the right dose. If you develop any side effects like diarrhea or lethargy, decrease your dosage.

Conclusion

We must reiterate that everyone is different. Your physical makeup, needs, and other factors all play a part in getting your CBD oil to work best for you. We’ve given you suggestions on finding the proper dose and how to take your dose of CBD oil each day, but we also encourage you to find the right timing for your dose. Taking CBD oil for sleep would require a different schedule than taking it to help recover from a workout. In addition, you may find that the CBD uniquely affects you as well, so you have to adjust your timing.

Let’s take, for example, if you feel only slight benefits from the CBD when you hold it under your tongue, but you feel it kick in about two hours later after you swallow it. In this example, you should take your dose two to three hours before bedtime instead of right before bed. The opposite is true if you get quick results from holding it under your tongue. In that case, you should just wait until right before bed before taking your dose.
